Positano is probably the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast. It sits on a rocky outcrop and descends to the sea from the mountain. If you arrive from the sea the town looks like a multi-hued shell of whites, pinks, yellows and grey set against the blue of its sea.
The town of Positano
The history of Positano is a series of ups and downs, just like its streets. It was destroyed by a seaquake in 1343 and from the XV century suffered incursions from Ottoman pirates. In the XVIII century it reached the peak of it splendour with maritime trade but after the Unification of Italy and the growth of new sea-trade routes it began to decline. So much so as to become a simple fishing village and later experienced mass emigration to the United States.
It was with the construction of the state road (SS 163) that Positano regained its splendour and became an international destination. Initially the village could only be reached by sea or along mountain paths such as the famous Sentieri Degli Dei (Paths of the gods), ancient tracks once used by shepherds that connect Agerola to Nocelle, a district of Positano, where you can enjoy one of the most magnificent views of the Amalfi Coast, taking in Capri, the Faraglioni and the isle of Li Galli.
The beaches of Positano
For your Amalfi Coast itinerary, Grand Beach with its 300 metres of beach is one of the largest on the Amalfi Coast. If you arrive from the sea in summer you notice the luxury yachts in all their splendour which belong to international celebrities, artists, actors, footballers, politicians who anchor offshore.
For those wishing to have a swim in private there are various boats for hire in the Marina which can take you to one of the many small beaches along the coast. On one such beach you can even combine your swim with a meal in a renowned restaurant. Choose Dimora Salernum for your Amalfi Coast itinerary.
